Activity Mafex is the Spanish Railway Industry Association. Its main objective is to represent and defend the interests of the Spanish Railway Industry in general, and our current 115 members in particular, through the implementation of actions related to strategic intelligence, international promotion, trade policy, sectoral forums, working groups, R&D project office, innovation, talent, institutional relations, marketing and communications. Mafex is widely supported by the experience and prestige of the Agex Group Federation, of which it is a member. Mafex is also a prominent member of CEOE (Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations), UNIFE (European Railway Industry Association), PTFE (Spanish Railways Technological Platform), AET (Spanish Transport Association) and ERCI (European Rail Cluster Innitiative). It actively collaborates with entities such as the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Adif, Renfe, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, The Spanish Railway Foundation, Metrotenerife, Alamys, Uitp, Icex and the Basque Government, among others.

Main products and services

Mafex has conducted different working groups which are aligned with the strategic objectives of the Association: the reinforcement of internationalization, competitiveness of our members and the intensification of the representation of the Spanish rail sector.

Thanks to the services offered by Mafex, we foster collaboration amongst our members and contribute to the identification of new business opportunities, also reinforcing the sector’s positioning. We also lead direct and inverse trade delegations, the Spanish pavilion in main rail/mobility exhibitions worldwide, and the creation and implementation of in-house services.

With the aim of supporting the competitiveness of member companies, making them more innovative and technologically advanced, Mafex works towards the identification of calls at national and European level, boosting and managing consortia, implementing technological and non-technological project proposals and encouraging the participation of the member companies in R&D projects.

In addition, different sectoral forums, workshops and events are also organised to promote networking amongst main stakeholders.

Finally, Mafex carries out an intense work in communication and marketing to promote the sector and its members both at national and international level, as well as to present and represent in different forums of interest for the rail sector.

Top products: BUSINESS ASSOCIATIONS:  1. Participation in international exhibitions and congresses.  2. R&D Projects Office.   3. UC Ladicim - Mafex Master's programme in Railway Engineering. 4.  Forums and Working groups.

Activities by year

During 2022 MAFEX undertook different activities.

Throughout 2022 and despite the restrictions on mobility caused by the impact of Covid-19, Mafex has carried out varied activities in its areas of action (internationalisation, innovation and competitiveness, public affairs and communication). It is remarkable the organization of the third edition of Rail Live! Congress and Exhibition, which is the professional forum/meeting point for the railway sector. Rail Live also counted on the active support of Adif, Renfe, Icex Spain Export and Investments, the Spanish Railways Foundation, the Spanish Railway Technology Platform, the Community of Madrid, Madrid City Council and Metro Madrid. On this occasion, despite going virtual, more than 3,000 visitors, 200 speakers and more than 100 exhibitors were connected in the virtual area set up for the exhibition.

In addition, other international promotion actions were organized thanks to more than 7 sectorial meetings and attendance to two exhibitions and congresses, covering in total contacts from over 10 different countries, and with the presence of around 38 companies. Some of these countries were: France, Germany and Sweden.

In addition to our sectorial knowledge, we have our own methodologies for market and technology analysis. Through an organized and selective process of gathering external information and information from the Association itself, we provide value-added strategic intelligence and support to our member companies in the search for opportunities, as well as in making decisions related to their geographic markets.

Mafex launched the past year the sectorial forums with the aim of serving as a key mechanism of sectoral dynamization, and that are emerging as a meeting place between the organisations that make up the value chain of the railway sector. On this occasion it has been focused on international markets and, in particular, in France.

In the area of innovation, Mafex is currently collaborating in 6 projects, 3 of European scope. It is worth mentioning the STAFFER project which combines key stakeholders in the rail industry to closely cooperate in anticipating the training needs and improving the dialogue between the education sector and the labour market. Mafex also participates at European level in the EXXTRA, STARS and S-ACCESS projects. At national level in ePROMAT and Rail Innovation Network (RIN) which aims to create a collaboration between academia and industry, with the aim of driving a change in innovation in the railway sector and accelerating the adoption of new technologies and products from the research phase to their subsequent application in the market.
During the 2022 a Technological Agenda has been launched too. An instrument that has made it possible to identify the challenges and opportunities of the rail market from a technological point of view.

In the area of communication, Mafex Magazine has consolidated itself as an international dissemination channel and increased the participation of associated companies, sharing news and preparing special "In depth" overviews on current issues. In addition, reports and sector announcements were issued, as well as our own internal communications and marketing actions were taken through different channels (press, social media, etc.).
